Recommendation

  • Acclimatize to the Altitude: Cusco is at an altitude of 11,023 feet (3,400 meters). To avoid altitude sickness, take it easy on the first day, drink plenty of water, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Bring Comfortable Footwear: You’ll be walking on uneven and sometimes slippery terrain at both Machu Picchu and the archaeological sites in Cusco. Make sure to bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.

  • Dress in Layers: The weather can change quickly in the highlands. It’s best to wear layers, as mornings and evenings can be chilly, while afternoons may get warmer.

  • Protect Yourself from the Sun: Even at higher altitudes, the sun can be intense. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays.

  • Pack Light for the Train: On your way to Machu Picchu, you’ll take the train. Pack only what you need for the day, as there is limited space for luggage on the train.

  • Stay Hydrated: The dry air at high altitudes can lead to dehydration. Carry a water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the trip, especially when touring the sites.

  • Respect Local Culture: Be respectful of local traditions and customs. In Cusco, Machu Picchu, and surrounding areas, it’s important to be mindful of the sacredness of the land and the people’s heritage.

  • Early Start for Machu Picchu: The best way to avoid large crowds at Machu Picchu is to start early. Be prepared for an early departure to make the most of your time at this iconic site.

  • Bring Cash for Souvenirs: While many places accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to carry cash (Soles) for small purchases, such as souvenirs, snacks, or tips.

  • Take Photos but Respect the Rules: Machu Picchu has specific rules regarding photography. Make sure you’re aware of the restrictions on certain areas and respect the site’s guidelines.

Is this trip right for you?

  • This trip visits places at high altitudes, and as a result, some people may experience altitude sickness regardless of age or physical condition. Please refer to the Medical and Health Information section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • This journey involves extensive walking to visit the sites, and if you choose to trek the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, you will face strenuous hikes. We recommend this trip for those with a good level of fitness. It is important to bring comfortable footwear suitable for hiking. See the “Packing” section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • For those trekking the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, accommodation will be in campsites with basic facilities. Undoubtedly, this experience is not just about reaching the final destination (Machu Picchu) but about the incredible journey itself.
  • According to Machu Picchu’s visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site in a single direction. Once the guided tour begins, exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. After the guided visit concludes, visitors must leave the site, and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not allowed. Please refer to the Itinerary for more details.
  • Travelers who choose different ways to reach Machu Picchu (Inca Trail, Quarry Trail, or Train) will not follow the same routes within the site. This means that you may not be able to take photos together overlooking Machu Picchu, whether traveling on the same booking or separate bookings.
