Itinerary
We leave Cusco very early in the morning to Calca where we will stop for a short break to visit the farmer’s market.after We will then continue driving, crossing the Willkapunku Pass at over 4400m,before descending to Cuncani. Here we will meet our arrieros (horsemen) and start our trek.
We begin by trekking for around 2 hrs before stopping for lunch, and then continue trekking to cross the Huillquijasa Pass at 4445m. After another 2 hours we will reach a small valley where we will see traditional Andean farmhouses and herds of alpaca and llama. The views are spectacular, with three beautiful lagoons in the valley and the sacred valley mountains of Veronica and Ccolque Cruz. We will arrive at our campsite next to Quishuarani.
An early start will give us the best views as we begin our gradual ascent of the Abra Pachacutec, orCondor Pass. At 4700m, this is the highest point of our trek. From the top we are rewarded with views of the snow-capped peaks of Pitusiray (5750m) and Chicon
(5500m). At the top of the pass we will make a small offering to the Andean gods to thank them for our safe passage. Our trek continues for an hour along a narrow, barren ridge before dropping down to the brilliant glacial lakes of Suirococha and Yuraccocha where we will stop for lunch. After lunch we will trek downhill into an area full of potato plantations, to reach our campsite near Cancha Cancha village
After breakfast we will continue trekking downhill to the lower part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our trail follows a small river flanked by steep mountains, passing through Queuñas bushes and pretty farmland. When we reach Huaran village we will stop for lunch before continuing by road toOllantaytambo. We take the train from here to Aguas Calientes and spend the night there in a hotel.
Today we will catch the bus up to Machu Picchu where you will be given a guided tour of the site which will last for around 2½ to 3 hours. There is also an option to climb Huayna Picchu, the famous mountain behind the ruins, but you will need to book a permit in advance. In the afternoon, we will catch the train from Agua Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where you will be met by our driver who willtransfer you to your hotel in Cuzco.

- This journey involves extensive walking to visit the sites, and if you choose to trek the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, you will face strenuous hikes. We recommend this trip for those with a good level of fitness. It is important to bring comfortable footwear suitable for hiking. - For those trekking the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, accommodation will be in campsites with basic facilities. Undoubtedly, this experience is not just about reaching the final destination (Machu Picchu) but about the incredible journey itself.
- According to Machu Picchu’s visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site in a single direction. Once the guided tour begins, exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. After the guided visit concludes, visitors must leave the site, and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not allowed. Please refer to the Itinerary for more details.
- Travelers who choose different ways to reach Machu Picchu (Inca Trail, Quarry Trail, or Train) will not follow the same routes within the site. This means that you may not be able to take photos together overlooking Machu Picchu, whether traveling on the same booking or separate bookings.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Lares Trek usually lasts 4 days and 3 nights, although it can be adjusted depending on the itinerary. It includes transportation from Cusco, a professional bilingual guide (Spanish and English), porters for the collective team, full meals (breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks), tents and camping equipment, entrance to the communities of the Lares Valley and Machu Picchu, and return train transportation from Aguas Calientes to Cusco. It does not include personal expenses, tips or personal equipment such as trekking boots, but we will provide you with a detailed list to prepare you.
The Lares Trek has a moderate to high level of difficulty, with daily walks that can last between 5 and 7 hours, including mountainous terrain, altitudes of up to 4,200 meters and uneven trails. Good physical condition, previous trekking experience, and acclimatization to Cusco’s altitude (3,400 meters) are required. We recommend backpacking training before the tour, and our team will give you advice on how to adapt. If you have concerns about your health, please consult with us to customize your experience.
The cost of the Lares Trek varies by season and group, but generally ranges from $450 to $650 USD per person for international tourists, and from 1,500 to 2,200 Peruvian soles for nationals, with possible discounts for students or minors. It includes everything mentioned, except personal equipment. We accept payments by credit/debit card, bank transfers, and in some cases, cash at our office in Cusco. We recommend booking in advance to secure your spot and take advantage of special rates.
We recommend that you bring comfortable trekking boots, thermal and rain gear, a sleeping bag, sunscreen, a hat, drinking water, identification documents (passport for internationals, DNI for nationals), a flashlight, and a day pack. It is also useful to bring cash for purchases in local communities or tips, and swimwear to enjoy the Lares hot springs. Our team will provide you with a complete list of equipment and tips to acclimatize and enjoy the adventure. If you need to rent equipment, we can help.
It is not necessary, but it is an advantage. Our guides are bilingual and offer explanations in both Spanish and English, ensuring that both national and international tourists understand the history, culture and details of the communities and landscapes of the Lares Valley, as well as Machu Picchu. If you speak another language, you can let us know in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate or provide materials in other languages. The experience is designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone.
