EXCURSION TO THE FLOATING ISLANDS OF UROS

The people on the Uros Floating Islands call themselves “kotsuña” or “the man of the lake” and their origins begin prior to that of the Incas. They are found on the North Puno Bay, 6kms from Lacustre Port, at an altitude of 3812 meters above sea level (the highest lake in the world). The islands are located in the Puno Bay where the cold and dry climate is lessoned due to the amount of constantly evaporating water in the area. The average temperature is 10º C thanks to the regulatory act of the sun rays hitting the water throughout the day. At nightfall, the accumulated heat is then dispersed.
